A Mother's Love

While my mother was coping with dad's illness and his subsequent passing, she embroidered dozens of fabric postcards.  Quite a few were sent as thank-yous to the many people who helped my parents during the course of dad's illness.

As Christmas came around, she was still stitching.  This is the one that she hand delivered to me mid December. I think that it is absolutely gorgeous and will be keeping it out on display for quite a while yet.

Post Card Friendship Friday - Library Renewal

While I was unpacking some boxes of books from my husband's grandfather, this postcard fell out of one of them.  It is noting that a book he had borrowed for a test had been renewed for two weeks.  I don't know if it was for a test he was taking or one he was giving to his students.

I hadn't come across a card like this before and thought it was interesting.  Hope that you enjoy it.

Postcard Friendship Friday - It's Cold Out Here

On the back of this card it says "Polar Bear in the Canadian Arctic".

I must have sent this to my son in 1995 when I was out of town on a business trip.

I wasn't going to show the stamp, but then realized that not all the visitors to this blog are in Canada.

Post Cards My Sister Sent - My Running Hero

Terry Fox is one of the most known and beloved of all Canadians.  In 1981 he started his cross country.  For 143 days he ran a marathon, that's 26 miles a day for 3, 339 miles until he was too sick to continue.  His cancer , which earlier had claimed his right leg, was back.  This monument in Thunder Bay, Ontario marks the location where Terry stopped running.

I remember watching the news for updates on his progress and being devastated when he had to stop.  even though he had to stop, his memory remains.  Every September, thousands of Canadians lace on their shoes and run.  To date, runners around the world have raised $550 million for cancer research.

Orphaned PostCard Project

I was wandering around cyberspace and came across an intriguing site.  During travels, Post Muse collected postcards for many years.  It struck Muse as odd that this collection was just too darn blank on the back.  Now Muse is looking for willing participants who live where these postcards were purchased to help fill in the backs.

Fabric Postcard: Images of Spring

Once again I had dug into my mother's collection of fabric postcards.

Both cards this week were made by Mary Ann from Ontario, Canada.

Spring can't be too far behind when you start seeing both this images in your own yard.

Post Cards My Sister Sent - The Funnest Places on Earth

My sister loves roller coasters and along with that, amusement parks.

She never misses a chance to visit a Disney location.

She visited Tokyo Disneyland while she was living in Japan and teaching English.

I knew she couldn't pass up the opportunity to visit with Belle, Esmeralda and Snow White.

She sent this card to my children.

She must have really loved it as she sent them this second card a week later.

I don't know anything about Odaiba.  I found an article on Wikipedia.  It is an artificial island that was built in Tokyo Bay.  On the back of the postcard my sister wrote about a big Ferris wheel that is covered with flashing and changing lights.  If you  scroll down on the wikipedia article, you will see a good image of the area at night and this Ferris wheel clearly shows.  She said that there is also a 'Where the Wild Things are' play land with giant characters of Max and Maxi walking around.

Now we travel half way around the world, almost to my backyard.  Canada's Wonderland  has some fantastic world class roller coasters.  Not surprising that my sister would visit there.  She started the writing on the back of the postcard with "Dearest Heather, my rainbow sister", so of course she had to send this postcard of the entrance to Happy Land.

I am left wondering why I don't have a postcard from Paris Disney?

With the promise of spring returning, I thought I would share some spring images.

/This started out as a quilt block for a quilt that was being made and donated to raise funds for breast cancer patients.  This extra block was pieced by Stella in British Columbia, Canada and Cheryl in Ontario, Canada turned it into a postcard.

Fabric Postcards - Back to Winter

After that all too brief glimpse into the promise of spring, we are back to snow and winter temperatures.  Time to look at that 'silver lining', this time in the form of postcards.

Into the Mailbox They Go

 This is one of my favourite postcards to send overseas.  There is a large Mennonite population in this area and it attracts a lot of tourism.  These are very respectful photographs, no faces are fully visible.  Yes, there really are buggies on our roads.  We see them most every day.

This one will be on its way to Belarus.

I made this postcard a little while back.  It is made with one inch squares a fabrics that are fused onto a stiff backing.  I then used black thread and various machine stitches to fasten them down.  I will use a Sharpie marker to write my sister's address on the back along with a message.  For postage I will add one of the stick on stamps and then touch it lightly with a hot iron to help it really adher.  At the post office I will request that it be handstamped just incase the stamp does fall off in the process.

Fabric Postcards - White does not always mean Snow

For several years, my mother has belonged to an online group that make and then swap fabric postcards.  Each month there is a theme and you can chose to join in the fun. You make four postcards: one for yourself, and three to mail to the other participants.

While my mother was visiting last week, I borrowed some of her cards and took photos of them.  She has dozens and dozens of these wonderful pieces of art.  Over the next few months I will be sharing some of them with you in a Sunday morning post.

The theme this week is 'White' in honour of all that snowy stuff that has been flying around outside.

Write, Stamp, Mail that Postcard

I love that excitement of finding a postcard in my mailbox.  Often it will be from my sister Nancy,who is frequently travelling.  A few weeks ago she suggested to me that we mail at least one postcard each week during the upcoming year.  Great idea.  Count me in.

Postcards this week.

My niece has been visiting with us for the past six months.  This morning she left on a circuitous route through the United States before her return to New Zealand.  While packing she came across several postcards.  She wrote them up and I'll pop them in the mail for her.

 Two of the cards were bought on our recent trip to Toronto.  Great night shots.  Don't you just love that cute one of Ariel that is addressed to one of her friends.


The cutesy Bear in the tent I am sending to my grandmother.  She's in her 90's and doesn't travel any more.  I don't get a chance to visit her often enough .  I know that she has always loved to recieve mail; off it goes to her.
